Biggest exploding box ever…

We probably all have a project we’ve made that goes in our ‘all time favourites’ category. For me it has to be this exploding box card that I made a few weeks ago for a wonderful couple at Create & Craft to be given to one of them as she left to go on maternity leave.

It needed to be big enough for LOADS of signatures and messages (I’m talking super loved humans here) so I knew it would be pretty complicated and big.

So it was a box that was around 25cm cubed, with 6 layers of pages, tabs, tags, pockets and waterfall notecards on each side.

I kept with a neutral colour scheme as we don’t know what genre the baby will be. Most elements were cut on the Brother Scan n Cut, after either creating or purchasing individual shapes and files for each element and resizing them for each page. I can tell you I used around 15 sheets of 12″ x 12″ paper and card all together!

The cot in the centre was also a scan n cut file, bought and downloaded from Etsy, as was the large heart sentiment topper. In fact, the sentiment was intended to be used in reverse, but I chose to use the negative (or waste) and then die-cut it into a heart shape. This is where I wish I had taken step by step photos!

Everything was adhered with Pinflair Book Binding wet glue, and hot glue for the flowers and little bunting to finish.

All in all it took around 10-11 hours to create but I was so happy with the result. It had been a very long time since I had the chance to papercraft in my own style, and with whatever tools and products I wanted, so I really did love every minute of it!

  1. This is fantastic and the love you put into it really shows. I’m sure it will be treasured by the new Mom and Dad.

  2. I also made an exploding box for my daughter’s 21st birthday back in June.
The box was 5” square and I had 21’s in the corners. I’d filled it with photos and I’d made tiny envelopes to put money in.
She absolutely loved it, in fact so did two of my colleagues at work as I’m currently in the process of making another one for a 21st and one for an anniversary.
